What program should I use to make a music video for free?

I really really want to make a music video, and so i tried on Windows Movie Maker, but it keeps on not responding, so that i can't get anything done. I've had to start over many projects because of that problem, and i would like to use something different but very similar. Sony Vegas 8 is a program that's been suggested but it requires paying and i also heard that there is a way to get it for free but there's a possibility of being sued for 6 million dollars so i wish to stay away from that program. I've tried using Video Thang, but it's not what I'm looking for. Video Thang does not let you watch the video, or "mix" as Video Thang calls it, before sharing it. Please please please. I really want to make this music video without having to pay. Anyone who has previous music video making experiences please hand out your advice!!
