Prednisone for cancer treatment?

My 84 year old step-father's lymphoma has returned. The oncologist told us today that he doesn't want to use chemo for treatment for him due to his age and other health problems, but might prescribe prednisone after all the blood tests come back. How does this medication help with cancer such as lymphoma?
