What do you think of Bulgaria?

I'm from the cold war period, and I have to admit, I used to have an image of Bulgaria as a grey, humourless country. However, I now work with several Bulgarians and am friendly with them and I'd like to visit. Apparently the Black sea coast is lovely, and I've tried a superb Merlot (a red wine) from Bulgaria.
